A kirana counter is one of the hardest places to bill: loose grains by weight, packed brands by scan, regulars on credit and walk-ins on UPI, all in the same evening rush. Software that looks good in a demo can still slow you down here. Use these twelve checks before you decide.
The counter
- It works with no internet. Pull the network cable during the demo and make a bill. If billing stops, so will your shop when the network does.
- It is fast with a barcode gun. Scan, Enter, next. The search box should keep the cursor so a scan never lands in the wrong place.
- It handles loose items. Sell 250 g of dal or half a kilo of sugar on the same bill as packed goods, with the amount right to the paisa.
- It finds items the way you type. If your list has Hindi names, typing "chawal" in English should still find चावल.
- It can hold a bill. One customer remembers something else; you should be able to serve the next without losing the first bill.
Money and records
- It makes proper GST bills. GSTIN, HSN, the CGST + SGST split, and a GSTR-1 file at month end. Read what a GST bill must show.
- It has a real udhar khata. Credit bills should go to the customer's account by themselves, with part payments and a WhatsApp reminder.
- It tracks stock without extra work. Stock should go down with every bill and up with every delivery, with a low-stock list you can send to the supplier.
- It imports your price list from Excel. Typing 1,500 items by hand takes days. Importing takes minutes, and re-importing should update prices.
Safety and support
- It backs up on its own. Several times a day, with an option to copy to a pen drive or Google Drive. Ask to see a restore.
- It speaks your language. Screens in Hindi or Marathi for staff, and support on WhatsApp in the language you are comfortable with.
- You know the full cost. One-time or yearly, what happens after the first year, and the cost of the printer, scanner and labels you will need.

How to run the demo
Bring 30 of your own items, including five loose ones. Ask the vendor to load them, then bill a real-looking basket: two packed items by scan, one loose item by weight, a discount, and payment split between cash and UPI. Put one bill on udhar and send a reminder. If all of this feels quick, the software will survive your evening rush.
