Short answer: Indian shops use four kinds of billing software: offline desktop software, online (cloud) software, mobile billing apps, and accounting software with billing. For a busy single-counter shop with patchy internet, offline desktop software is usually the safest. For several branches on one stock, cloud software fits better. Here is the full comparison.
1. Offline desktop billing software
Installed on the shop's Windows PC. Bills, stock and khata are saved on that computer; the internet is only needed for extras such as updates.
- Good at: speed with a barcode gun, billing through power and network cuts, keeping data in the shop.
- Falls short on: seeing sales from home and sharing one live stock across branches, unless the software adds sync.
- Watch for: automatic backups. Without them a dead hard disk can take your records with it.
KamaiPlus Desktop is this kind of software.
2. Online (cloud) billing software
Runs in a browser or a thin app; data lives on the provider's servers.
- Good at: several branches, live numbers on the owner's phone, no backups to manage yourself.
- Falls short on: working without internet, and speed at the counter when the connection is slow.
- Watch for: the yearly cost after the first year, and what happens to your data if you stop paying.
3. Mobile billing apps
Billing on an Android phone, often with a Bluetooth printer.
- Good at: very small shops, stalls and doorstep sellers; low cost to start.
- Falls short on: long bills, many items and a fast queue; a phone screen is small for a busy counter.
- Watch for: where the data is stored and whether it is backed up.
4. Accounting software with billing
Software built for accounts, such as Tally Prime, that can also make invoices.
- Good at: books of accounts, ledgers and what your CA needs.
- Falls short on: a fast retail counter, barcode labels and udhar reminders; it needs more training.
- Common setup: bill in a counter app, then export the sales to Tally for the CA.

Which one suits your shop?
- Kirana or general store, one or two counters: offline desktop, with automatic backups.
- Fataka shop in the festival rush: offline desktop; a weak network must never stop the counter.
- Restaurant or café: a counter billing app with quick menu search, GST added or included and UPI; add kitchen slips if your kitchen needs them.
- Several branches: cloud, or desktop software with reliable sync.
- Doorstep seller or very small stall: a mobile app.
When KamaiPlus is not the right choice
We would rather tell you now. KamaiPlus does not yet make e-invoices (IRN), e-way bills or GSTR-3B; it has no batch and expiry tracking for pharmacies; staff logins with roles and kitchen order slips (KOT) are not there yet; and live stock across branches is still in beta. If you need one of these today, choose software that has it. See KamaiPlus at a glance for everything it does.
If your shop is a busy counter that must never stop, KamaiPlus is built for exactly that. See billing in KamaiPlus or book a free demo.
