Udhar keeps regular customers coming back, and it is also where many shops quietly lose money: a forgotten entry, an amount nobody agrees on, a reminder that never gets sent. These nine habits keep credit friendly and the money coming back.
1. Write every udhar the moment it happens
Not at night, not "later". Every credit bill should carry the customer's name and mobile number. Most disputes start with an entry made from memory.
2. Give each customer a limit
Decide how much udhar you are comfortable with for each regular, and say it politely when they reach it. A clear limit is easier than a sudden "no".
3. Pick a fixed reminder day
Send reminders on the same day every month, such as the 1st. When everyone gets a reminder on the same day, it feels like routine, not a personal demand.
4. Always say the exact amount
"About two thousand" starts an argument. "₹2,140 as of today" ends one. A written record you can show, or send, makes the number easy to trust.
5. Make paying one tap
Add a UPI link to the reminder that opens the customer's UPI app with your UPI ID and the exact amount filled in. The fewer steps, the sooner people pay. You can write one with the free udhar reminder tool.
6. Record part payments the same day
Customers often pay a part. Note it immediately against their account so the next reminder is correct. A wrong reminder hurts trust more than a late one.
7. Review the list every week
Once a week, look at your top ten balances and the ones that have not moved in a month. Call those few personally; send routine reminders to the rest.
8. Keep shop money and home money apart
Do not settle shop udhar with personal favours or home expenses. Mixed accounts are impossible to reconcile later.
9. Keep the khata where it cannot be lost
A notebook can get wet, torn or lost. A digital khata that backs itself up keeps years of records safe, and finds any customer in seconds.
